Frequently Asked Questions

What is the vision of Music4Life?
Music4Life is intended to give every student in Seattle Public Schools access to instruments in good working condition, high quality instruction, and supplies necessary to participate in instrumental and vocal music programs.

What is the immediate goal of Music4Life?
Our immediate goal is to acquire musical instruments and other resources needed to expand elementary instrumental music programs in Seattle Public Schools. Acquisition of 1,200 musical instruments suitable for 4th and 5th grade music students will allow Seattle Public Schools to expand from 36 percent to 50 percent student participation.

What about choral music?
Choral music is important, too, but most students arrive at school with the instrument required to sing. After we accomplish our immediate Music4Life goals, we can expand to other grade levels and other forms of music instruction.

What about middle school and high school music programs?
Most students start instrumental music in 4th and 5th grades. By expanding elementary instrumental music programs, we will help secondary music programs to grow, too

How will Music4Life address the wealth of cultures in Seattle?
Like choral music, world music is also important. Music defines generations and cultures, and is an important part of our heritage and our diverse communities. A number of schools in Seattle have hip hop, jazz, mariachi, marimba, and steel drum bands, electronic music, and other instrumental ensembles. We hope to see these thrive and expand, and look forward to supporting world music in the years to come.

How is Rotary involved in the program?
Rotary is one of 2 organizations collaborating to launch and implement this program, along with Seattle Public Schools. The Rotary Club of Seattle, also known as “Seattle #4” because it was the fourth chartered Rotary club in the world nearly 100 years ago, helped launch Music4Life, but the program is intended to be supported by all 18 Rotary clubs within the city of Seattle. Music4Life™ is also supported by Rotary District 5030, which comprises these 11 Rotary clubs.

Who benefits from Music4Life?
Initially, we are expanding instrumental music programs for 4th and 5th grade students in Seattle Public Schools. Later, Music4Life can help a broader range of ages and grade levels and support additional forms of music education.

What kinds of instruments are needed?
Many musical instruments are needed, including violins, cellos, flutes, clarinets, trumpets and trombones for elementary-aged children. Any instrument “lovingly used” or better, that is serviceable, can be used for this program.

What do instruments cost?
Good quality beginner instruments range from $200 to $1500 apiece. Instruments most in demand include violins ($200 each), cellos ($600 each), flutes ($400 each), clarinets ($400 each), and trumpets ($350 each). Other instruments include violas, string basses, bass clarinets, oboes, trombones, alto saxophones, baritone horns, and snare drums.

Who owns the instruments?
Instruments are contributed to Music4Life on behalf of Seattle Public Schools. Music4Life manages distribution to eligible students.

Who repairs and maintains the instruments?
Music4Life will manage the instrument program and coordinate maintenance and necessary repairs.

What about supply and maintenance costs?
Music4Life recognizes the importance of funding maintenance and supplies. Supply costs can add up. Instrument cases cost $150 each. Violin and cello strings cost $20 per set. Woodwind reeds cost $12 per box. Mallets and drum stands run from $20 to $100. Wire music stands cost $10. Annual maintenance costs approximately $50 per instrument.

Who handles the recognition letters for tax purposes?
Music4Life, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, will send recognition letters that contributors may use for tax purposes to the extent allowable by federal law. Contributors are advised to consult with their personal financial advisors regarding individual tax benefits.

How can my child get an instrument?
Contact your school’s elementary, instrumental or music instructor or your school office. Once an assessment of your child’s musical interests is done, an appropriate musical instrument will be identified and delivered to your school.  Your child may use this instrument “on loan” as long as s/he uses it for its intended purposes.

Where can I purchase an instrument for my child?
Seattle is fortunate to have many fine music stores and instrument makers. The Seattle Mayor’s Office of Film & Music maintains a list online.
